Wie Wins in Hawaii

Wie Overtakes Stanford to Prevail in Hawaii

It was the idea setting for Michelle Wie’s third LPGA win. Playing in her home state of Hawaii, Wie overcame a four-shot deficit Saturday evening to win the LPGA LOTTE Championship Presented by J Golf

Michelle WieThe putter that has betrayed Wie so often over the course of her professional career proved reliable during Saturday’s finale. She finished with six birdies against a single bogey at the last for a 5-under par 67 that brought her home at 14-under par 274.

Angela Stanford, who had the lead at the start of the final round, came up short in a bid for career win number six after a 73 left her two shots back at 12-under par 276.

Inbee Park placed third at 277 while Hyo Joo Kim, who was playing on a sponsor’s exemption and was tied for second with Wie when the final round commenced, was fourth at 278.

But it was Wie who commanded the stage, particularly after her notoriously balky putter heated up. She birdied three of her first six holes then added birdies at 12, 15, and 16 to build a three-shot lead.

“It was fun out there today,” Wie said.  “Angela played awesome.  It was really tight for a long time and it could have gone any other way.  It was hard to catch up to her today.  It was not easy.  She was striking it well, she was making everything.  It was just awesome today.  I had so much fun.”

The support of the galleries that followed Wie around Ko Olina Golf Club gave her an emotional lift. “I definitely heard that a couple of times.  Like I said, the support, I definitely feel like they all week gave her an emotional lift on Saturday.

“I willed a lot of shots in today.  It was so much fun.  It was fun to get them excited when I made putts.  I didn’t want to disappoint them and wanted to make them proud.”

Angela StanfordWith the attention of the gallery, not to mention the Golf Channel broadcast crew focused on Wie, Stanford was something of an afterthought. But she considered her week a successful one.

“I played really well,” she said.  “Today just didn’t make the putts that I’ve been making. {Wie]  shot five under, so it’s not like I just fell over.  I just didn’t make the putts I needed to.”
