The Long Road Back: Hur Returns to Winner’s Circle
Mi Jung Hur found another gear on Sunday and, in the process, ended what must have seemed like an eternity of frustration.
Hur held off world number-one Stacy Lewis to win the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic in Prattville, Alabama. It was the second career win for the 25-year old but her first finished 72 holes at the Senator Course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capital Hill at 21-under par 267. The 25-year old Hur becomes the LPGA Tour’s 16th different winner of 2014. Lewis finished second, one shot off the pace. Hur’s LPGA career started impressively. After winning as a rookie in 2009 at the Safeway Classic Presented by Coca Cola she recorded three top-10 finished the next year.
But the next year she struggled with a swing change and her performance dropped off. In 2009-10 she earned over $800,000, over the next three seasons she pocketed roughly half that amount. But Hur was committed to regaining her form; she says the thought of not winning again never crossed her mind.
“I didn’t think about that,†she said, “but I work after like struggle with my swings and swing change, and I think some day I can win for sure.â€
In recent weeks Hur had a sense her old form was returning. She tied fir ninth in Oirtland and tied for third at the season’s final major championship.
I had a really good time in Portland and Evian. My confidence get back, so that’s why I have a great time this week. Also, like in three or four years I had a swing change and my putting didn’t work well because I only work on the swing for two years. My putting didn’t work and even my swing didn’t work, so it was really tough time for me. But at this point it will be way better than the last few years.â€
Hur’s effort in Alabama was made even more special by the fat that her father was on her bag. â€I had a really great time with my father on the course for sure. He did a really great job. And  here in Prattville had a lot of Korean gallery following our group, so it’s really help for me.â€
